Bioscrub ProTec is your partner for alternatives to Microbeads
Proven, cost-effecive exfoliating ingredients

In December 2015 President Obama banned the use of solid plastic particles in rinse-off products. With scrutiny of the environmental impact of exfoliating microplastics used in Personal Care building for a number of years, we've been working hard to validate and offer viable alternatives.

"Despite the ban only applying to US for now, we've been busy validating a range of affordable and effective exfoliants to allow our customers the option of moving away from microplastics immediately."

Our alternatives to microplastics for exfoliation

Through working with our suppliers and conducting our own rigorous in-house formulation validation work, we are able to offer the following viable and cost-effective alternatives to microplastics for exfoliation:
Scrubs

Bioscrub® Based on Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB). Bioscrub grades provide the same effectiveness as polyethylene microplastic scrubs.

Naturebead® Naturebead products are spherical powders designed for use as exfoliating agents, and are non-irritating to the skin surface. Available in a range of colours.

Naturescrub® Naturescrub products are exfoliating powders produced from natural based waxes. Naturescrubs are an effective natural alternative to microplastic beads.

Synscrub® Synscrub grades are synthetic wax beads with high melt point and hardness. Available in a range of colours.

PHAs are Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) belongs to a group of polyesters known as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA). PHAs are produced by direct bacterial fermentation of glucose and sugar-containing substances such as molasses, lactose, cellulose or starch. The PHA is extracted, harvested and purified and the biodegradable plastic is made into pellets.

The materials derived from this process are a sustainable alternative to petrochemical-derived products. PHB is a homopolymer and is the most prominent of the PHA biopolymer family.

Benefits of Bioscrub®

Bioscrub® grades are designed for use as non-irritating scrub and exfoliating agents, providing the same effectiveness as polyethylene microbead plastic exfoliants.

Bioscrub® grades use a source of PHB that provides the following advantages:

* No genetically modified bacteria are used in the fermentation process.
* All dextrose is from non-GMO sources.
* Exclusive patented extraction technology.
* Small carbon footprint.

Double blind study to demonstrate exfoliating efficacy

A double blind study was performed by AMA Laboratories using a topically applied test material containing Bioscrub® 20PC intended to reduce the scaliness associated with dry and flaky skin.

D-SQUAME skin sampling discs were used to measure exfoliation before and after treatment. Heavy amount of scaling represents pattern 5. Normal skin, producing a few areas of small clumps of cells or a fine even single layer of cells, represents pattern 1.
